Snow Leopard trek

Snow Leopard often called the ‘Grey Ghost of the Himalayas’ remains one of the mysterious amongst the cat family. Due to its rare sightings and elusive behaviour there is hardly any accurate population count on them. Snow Leopard or the Panthera uncia is listed as Vulnerable on the IUNC- World Conservation Union’s Red List of the Threatened Species.

‘rChan’as Snow Leopard is called in Ladakhi – always has a wind of mystery around it. Apart from stories of encounter with people, there wasn’t any proof of its existence until 2002, when its truth was captured for the first time at Shun gorge of Zanskar Dr. Tsewang Namgyal of Snow Leopart Conservancy IT and Mr. Ashley. Thereafter, the study on assessment of its population was carried out into Hemis National Park, Rong Valley and Sham Valley by late Mr. Rinchen Wangchuk of Snow Leopard Conservancy IT and Dr. Rodney Jackson.

Chadar –frozen river trek –is an adventure winter trek done on the frozen Zanskar River. Against the very perception of trekking on the surface of land, Chadar – ‘The Frozen Sheet’ offers the surreal thrill of walking on the surface of the ice. The trekking is conducted in the month of January and February when the mercury drops down to -30⁰C. The day’s long trek on the frozen Zanskar River in the old days which generally is a free flowing river in summer was the only way to connect to the other part of Leh for basic goods and services.

River rafting

Rafting and the white water rafting are recreational adventure sport done in an inflatable raft with the assistance of single bladed paddle to navigate through the tough water. The activity became popular in the 195os if not earlier. The candidates are provided with headgear and a life guard for the safety purpose. The sport tests the strength of the candidates as a team whilst paddling with and against the current of the river at times.

In Ladakh one can experience the thrill and excitement of river rafting on Indus, Shyok and Zanskar River. River rafting on Zanskar River is also known as white water rafting. Owning to the small window of summer in the region, the favourable time for river rafting in Ladakh is June to September.
